Norfolk Property Settlement Agreements

Protecting Your Interests

When facing a divorce or separation, it is important to protect your financial interests. Even if you are not extraordinarily wealthy, be sure you work with an experienced lawyer who can help make sure your property is divided fairly and favorably.

At Goldblatt, Cohen & Legum, P.C., we have been handling property settlement agreements in Norfolk and the surrounding Virginia area. In addition to our experience, attorney Steven M. Legum has an MBA. We use our knowledge to help our clients obtain favorable results in property division in Virginia.

Division Of Property

Virginia is an “equitable distribution” state. This means that the marital assets do not necessarily need to be distributed exactly 50-50. The court’s main focus is not exactly equal division, but an equitable split.

At Goldblatt, Cohen & Legum, P.C., an attorney from our firm will negotiate a marital property agreement, handling all aspects of the agreement, including:

  • Classifying assets and debts: The first task in division of property negotiations is to gather and classify the assets and debts as either marital or individual. Only the marital property will be divided in the divorce or separation. Any other assets will remain the property of the individual.
  • Valuating assets: The next step is to determine the value of the various assets involved. This can become complicated quickly if there are stocks, retirement plans, business ownership interests and other complicated assets.
  • Negotiating a marital property agreement: We will use our decades of experience to work with you and your ex-spouse to come up with a marital property division agreement that will be favorable to you and equitable in the eyes of the court.
  • Litigation: When negotiation is unsuccessful, we have the experience and knowledge to fight for your interests in court.
